Based on the century-old teachings of Joseph Pilates, this artful discipline is ideal for individuals seeking to improve strength, posture, flexibility and body awareness. Pilates is an empowering exercise method that has been called a "thinking way of moving." Its focus is quality of movement, structural alignment, core strength, stability and breathing.
Pilates is a series of controlled movements performed on mats and specifically designed apparatus. It combines the focus on suppleness that you find in yoga with the emphasis on strength building found in the gym. In this way, it promotes balance, strength, flexibility and natural poise. Pilates will change the shape of your body. It can also help relieve back pain, speed recovery of soft tissue injuries and correct postural problems. It is a method of exercise used by athletes for conditioning, as well as physical therapists for rehabilitation.
Pilates develops your core by strengthening the deep abdominal and back muscles, increases overall physical strength, and aids in stress relief and relaxation. Pilates will reward you with the physical benefits of a stronger, leaner and more flexible body, and offer you a sense of well being and a lightness that comes with breathing easier and standing taller.
The Pilates Method is a valuable exercise discipline for all levels of fitness, and an important addition to any workout that will enhance both fitness and leisure activities. Through practicing Pilates movements, you will become more self-aware and better able to take control of your body and your life.
